Sunrise Hike at Spooner Lake

In: Trail Notes
Hiking with cats

This morning, I woke up early to do a sunrise hike with my kitten Pasha at Spooner Lake in Lake Tahoe.  My reason for waking up early to do the hike with my kitten is the weather is much cooler and more pleasant early in the morning than it is in the afternoon.  Temperatures lately have been in the 100’s of digits in Reno, NV.  Doing any kind of hike in the afternoon is too HOT.

My kitten Pasha does not seem to mind waking me up at 5 a.m. every morning either to pay or go on adventures in the woods.  He is slowly making progress at walking by my side.  Training him to stay by my side has been a challenge for the past 5 hikes we’ve been on.  He stops every five seconds, and stares at the trees!  Climbing trees is in his DNA!

To get him used to hiking by my side, I start very slow.  I bring his favorite treats on the trail.  Every time, he walk for couple minutes or longer, I usually reward him with treats!  He loves it! When he gets tired, he lets me know and I pick him up and carry him on his carrier.  My experience hiking with him has been a pleasant one!  He is adjusting to the outdoors very well!
