Memorial Day Adventure: Hiking McGee Creek Trail to McGee Lake
In: Trail Notes
Over Memorial Day weekend, I took a quick trip to Mammoth Lakes, California, and embarked on a memorable 14-mile day hike to McGee Lake via the McGee Creek Trail in the John Muir Wilderness. Starting at 6 a.m., I completed the hike by 2:30 p.m., taking in the stunning scenery along the way.
Trail Highlights
The McGee Creek Trail offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains, the shimmering Crowley Lake, and vibrant tree colors. This out-and-back trail is rated as moderate to difficult, with a challenging elevation gain of 2,480 feet. It’s best hiked from mid-July to mid-September, although conditions can be suitable earlier depending on snow levels.
The hike can be tailored to your fitness and schedule:
- Steelhead Lake: 10 miles roundtrip with a 2,350-foot elevation gain.
- McGee Lake: 14 miles roundtrip with a 2,480-foot elevation gain.
Trail Details and Preparation
Given the high elevation and steep ascent, it’s recommended to spend a few days acclimating in the Mammoth Lakes area before tackling this trail. The trailhead is easily accessible from Highway 395, about eight miles south of Mammoth Lakes. Take the McGee Creek exit and drive four miles past the McGee Pack Station to the parking lot.
Permits
A wilderness permit is required for overnight trips in the John Muir Wilderness. For day hikes, permits are typically not needed, but it’s always a good idea to check local regulations before heading out.
